How Much Does a Private Chef Cost in Costa Rica?

The honest numbers, from a chef who publishes his.

The short answer: expect $75 to $110 per person for an all-inclusive three-course dinner on the southern Pacific coast, with the per-person rate dropping as your group grows. Breakfast service runs $45 to $55 per person. All-inclusive should mean ingredients, service, and cleanup; if it doesn't, ask what the quote leaves out.

What the price actually covers

A private chef dinner isn't a cooking fee. The evening includes designing a menu around your group, shopping the local markets that morning, arriving with everything the meal needs, cooking in your kitchen, serving each course, and leaving the kitchen cleaner than it started. When you compare against a restaurant night out, compare against all of that, plus nobody driving mountain roads after dinner.

The group-size math

Most chefs price per person with tiers, because a dinner for ten doesn't cost five times a dinner for two. Eklectic Kitchen's published tiers look like this:

GuestsServicePer person
2-3Dinner$100 - $110
4-8Dinner$85 - $95
9-12Dinner$75 - $85
6-12Breakfast$45 - $55

Children under 12 dine at half price, which changes the math meaningfully for family villas. A table of ten adults at the low tier lands around $750 to $850 for a full three-course evening, in your own villa, with zero logistics. Full details live on the pricing and payments page.

What moves the price up or down

Group size is the big lever. Menu complexity matters too: a casado feast and a multi-course tasting with premium proteins shop very differently. Location plays a small role when a villa sits far up a mountain road. What should never move the price after you've booked: surprise charges. A quote worth trusting is all-inclusive and in writing.

Watch-outs when comparing chefs

Ask any chef you're comparing three things. Does the price include ingredients, or will groceries appear on top? Is service included, or does the chef cook and leave? And is cleanup part of the deal? Those three questions explain most of the price differences you'll see between quotes that look far apart at first glance.

The deposit and timing

A deposit is standard; Eklectic Kitchen confirms bookings with $150, refundable up to 7 days out. Menus are set at least 48 hours ahead so ingredients can be shopped fresh. In high season (December to April), villas book their chef nights early, so ask as soon as your dates are firm.

Pricing questions, answered

Is a private chef cheaper than eating out in Costa Rica?

For groups, often yes. Tourist-area restaurant mains run $20-$35 before drinks, tax, service, and the taxi. An all-inclusive chef dinner at $75-$110 per person covers three courses, ingredients, service, and cleanup, with no travel and no markup on the evening around it.

What is included in an all-inclusive private chef price?

With Eklectic Kitchen, everything the meal needs: menu planning, shopping, fresh ingredients, cooking, course-by-course service, and a spotless kitchen afterward. Gratuity is not included and is always appreciated.

Do private chefs in Costa Rica require a deposit?

Commonly, yes. Eklectic Kitchen takes a $150 deposit to confirm the booking, refundable if you cancel at least 7 days ahead.

How far in advance should I book a chef in high season?

December through April books quickly. Reach out as soon as you have dates; menu selections are due at least 48 hours before dinner.

Do kids pay full price?

Not with Eklectic Kitchen: children under 12 dine at half price.
